Travel to Austria & Travel Dates

By far the cheapest and easiest way of getting to Austria is flying Ryanair to Linz.

Driving from Nottingham to London Stansted takes around 135 minutes and costs around £35 in fuel. You can then park at Stansted, which costs around £25. You can also travel to Stansted by rail, by getting the train from Nottingham into London, then back out to Stansted.

The flight takes around 2 hours to Linz.

Once at Linz, you will need to hire a car to get to St Martin. And you will need to hire a car: travel by public transport is not going to be possible for this trip. It takes around 50 minutes to drive to St Martin from Linz.

You could investigate flights into Salzburg, which is around 85 minutes drive to St Martin, or Munich, which is around 110 minutes drive.

You can also travel to St Martin by car from the UK. Crossing from Dover or Hull, you should allow two to three days for the journey. We recommend Frankfurt as a halfway stopping point.

Travel to Austria by rail is another option you may wish to investigate.

Regardless of how you travel to Austria, please arrive well in time for the Stag Do on Thursday 9th June 2011. We suggest arriving on Wednesday 8th June. When you leave is up to you (and the people who you have booked a car with) but we are suggesting making a week long trip as opposed to a long weekend, leaving sometime Monday 13th -Wednesday 15th.

Hiya!

This is possibly the most advanced planning I have ever done, but while I am on here...

I am probably going to travel to Linz by train, where I will hopefully be able to meet up with some people to travel on to St Martin. The route will either be via Zurich (if my friend is still there!), or via sleeper from Cologne, or I may try and combine it with a bit of Italy. If anybody is interested in joining me on the low carbon scenic route there is loads of useful info here:

Hello Rosa,
If you decide to take the train I can recommen train station closer to St. Martin.
when going to Linz via Cologne, Schaerding, Andorf and Neumarkt-Kallham are on the way and closer than linz.
If coming from Salzburg, change to Attnang-Puchheim anf from there you can get direct to St. Martin Im Innkreis.
But I guess I will get you all those detail closer to the time. 8-)

Hi,

Just thinking about travel plans, train sounds fun. I'l have to think how this might fit in with other travel / life plans I might have around then.

Does anyone know when you be a good time to book trains to get a cheap deal, but as late as possible because I don't like making commitments. In other words, how late can I leave this? Im assuming early next year is probably about right.

Eurostar will not let you book more than 4 months in advance so you have a while Lance.

I'm tempted to try rail too Lance

We'll probably join in on the train plan as Katie is obsessed with public transport. And neither of us can drive which makes us a sucky carshare option.

Just a little reminder that you all will need to arrange a space in a hire car. There aren't any taxis out in the back of beyond, buses are few and only run during weekday work hours and it's far too far to walk (or skate) between the various venues. Please do not leave it until the last minute - or later - or expect someone else to do it for you.

Is there anyone who can drive in the (potential) train car? Or will we need to disperse ourselves among those with car skills?
